Beyond the Pages: Olivia deGregory
Olivia deGregory is the poet behind “How to Survive as a Foreigner in America” that was published in Volition’s Fall 2018 edition. In her poem, originally written for her Intro to Creative Writing class, she highlights the challenges foreigners face when introduced to American culture. She creates a quick and punchy list of do’s and don’ts for those who do not call America home. Her background as a Bahamian has given her a unique experience that she channels through her writing and everyday life. Check her out on social media: @olivialiedel. Beyond the Pages: Sydney Noel
Sydney Noel is junior at George Mason University who has been writing since 10th grade. After her grandmother Ruth passed away, writing became her outlet to vocalize and put words to her emotions. She is currently studying Applied Computer Science with a concentration in software engineering. Noel is an aspiring author and web developer. Her poem “American Fables” is found in Volition’s Fall 2018 edition where she explicitly addresses issues of discrimination, racial bias, and socioeconomic strife in regards to people of color. We are happy to announce that we are partnering with House Studios, a Grammy-winning multi-media recording company! Volition Literary and Arts Magazine would like to extend one last thank-you to everyone at GMU who submitted work for our Fall 2017 issue! We received 253 submissions, which is an impressive testament to how much creative talent we have at GMU. Our Fall 2017 issue will be out in the spring semester. Happy New Year!
Issue Update Due to some publishing issues, we’re releasing our Fall 2013 at the beginning of next semester. Congratulations Seniors! We’re sorry to see some of our editors and staff members leave, but as the semester draws to a close, so does their time here at Volition.
